Arrangements for the preparation of the 1950-51 report will be similar to those made for the 1949-50 report. As before, Departments are requested to contribute material for the appropriate sections of the report, and the timetable requires that this material should be with the editor (Miss Ware, of Information Department, S.222 Extension 517) not later than the 15th February. This means that the material will have to be compiled before the end of the year under review (1st April, 1950, to 31st March, 1951), but no undue diffi- culties are foreseen since Departments will be aware of most important developments impending and the editor's attention can be drawn to those points that will need checking at a later stage. It is most important that the material should reach the editor by the date stated since the whole time table is planned on this basis, and delays at this stage would cause serious complications later.
It is proposed that the Table of Contents should be the same as in the last report (Cmd.7958). The length of the respective sections of the report should also be about the same as in the last report, but variations can be made if required by circumstances. In general, however, the aim should be to reduce rather than to expand the length of the report. Departments are asked to give as many concrete examples of progress and achievement as possible, backed by statistics.
Departments are also asked to check the material they prepare against last year's report, and also with any references that may have been made in Parliament, in order to avoid any conflicting statements,
Departmental contributions should normally be approved by the appropriate Assistant Under-Secretary before being sent to Miss Ware; but the Economic Section will as in previous years he co-ordinated by the Economic General Department and approved by the Deputy Under-Secretary of State before being sent in.
